To See or Not To See

To See or Not To See
Ashlyn DeBoer

It was 3am in the morning. I woke up to something, not someone, but a creature with sharp nails and long fur that was touching my leg. I reached for my nightlight, when all the sudden my closet door creaked shut. Every part of my body was shaking, and the only thing running through my head was fear. Not one part of me even considered going into the closet, so I hid under my sheets trembling. “BOOM!” Something shattered all over the floor in my closet. I bolted for the window, running for my life. I ran for my friends house and pounded on their door.
*******

The next morning I went to Everland Cafè to get a cup of coffee. While I was there, a news report came on. It was towards the end of the report, so all I saw was something about a murder that had just recently happened. A couple moments after the report was over I overheard a man saying that the girl who murdered was in her 20’s. I found that to be a coincidence, due to the fact that I’m in my 20’s, plus what happened last night. I felt a weird feeling go down my body.

Once I was done with my coffee, I went home and found multiple police cars surrounding my house. With every part of my body shaking I went up to my sister and asked what’s wrong. She didn’t reply. I asked my mom, nothing. It was almost like I was invisible. I ran up to my bedroom and I saw my dad lying on my bed crying, bawling, and I had no idea why. To clear my mind from all this chaos I went for a walk. While I was on the walk I saw a flyer stapled to a pole on the end of our street. It said, There will be a funeral on 26th and A street at the Church, on Friday the 16th. To all friends and family, we would love to see you there for support for not only us but our loved daughter Avery. I felt more than one part of my body falling to the ground, like I was no longer living. Hoping that I would be surrounded by my family I woke up alone with no one here to help me. At that point I knew my life was over.

Hello, my name is Ashlyn DeBoer and I am writing a final report on the book “Outlive Your Life.” This will include facts about the book, reviews, and prayers. I hope by reading this you will get a better perspective on Jesus Christ’s Story.

Outlive Your Life Review 3

Dear Heavenly and Almighty father, I praise you for blessing me and my family with the food and supplies we need. I ask you send your Holy Angels to watch over those who might not have the food, clothes, or supplies that you blessed us with. Lastly I ask that you watch over those with fear and worries that that go to your word you name in prayer and worship. That they let all they feelings to you, those worries and fears bundled up inside.

In Your Son’s Name I Pray, Amen

This prayer I wrote above connects to my chapter 3 review because the main theme was “Let God Unshell You.” Unshell us to help others with less food, clothing, and supplies. That he also help us Unshell from all our worries and fears bundled up inside. That we pray to you and let you take care of all our fears and worries.

Outlive Your Life Chapter 3 review

Outlive Your Life Review 9

Dear almighty and powerful God, thank you for blessing me with the power to share you word through thought, word, and deed. I ask with all my heart that you watch over me, my family, and all people of Christ that they perform all their actions in the name of Grace. I confess I am one guilty of not going to prayer In my worst times, I ask you be with those who are also guilty of this that you help them through their rough times.

In Your Son’s Name I Pray, Amen

This prayer I wrote above connects to chapter 9 in three ways. One being the power to share your word. Two having the guilty feeling of not going to God through our rough times. Lastly three, performing our all our actions through Grace. Knowing that every action we perform is watched by God. Knowing that we need to perform actions that God Would approve of. Such as shaking the other team’s hands when we lose a game, being a good sport.

Chapter 9 review

Outlive Your Life Review 6

Dear Holy and All-Knowing God, Thank you for sending your Holy Angels to watch over me in my darkest times. I ask you for the confidence to come over my fears and spread you Holy Gospel to others. Welcoming others into the kingdom of God. I ask that send others the confidence as well to Spread your holy name to those who need it most. That we may share your love that you gave us to those who need it now. Thank you for your love and compassion that you gave us first.

In your Son’s Name I Pray, Amen

The prayer written above connects to My chapter review because of my theme Spreading the Holy Gospel. Most people like me don’t have the confidence to just walk up or talk to others about Christ. Having that confidence can mean welcoming one more person into God’s kingdom. Just that feeling is worth it all. That’s why praying for God to give us that confidence can make a huge impact.

Outlive Your Life Chapter 6 review

Essay Questions

A- Throughout the Book, “Outlive Your Life” I have seen many scenarios, of incidents where The book of Acts has been illustrated. I think one of the most important times in my life where this is demonstrated is in Church. I can connect many many times when we go through the book of acts to my life. One verse I think stands out above all is Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” I think this connects to Outlive Your Life because it’s main focus is witness and The Holy Spirit. I think these two themes are located and talked about multiple times. On page 5 it says, “1.75 billion people are desperately poor, 1 billion are hungry, millions are trafficked in slavery, and pandemic diseases are touring entire nations.” We witness this. Maybe not on a daily basis, but believe me we witness this. In our Church, we pray for this every time. The poor, sick, and hungry. We ask for the Holy Spirit to be with them and watch over them. I think this connects with the themes in Acts 1:8 perfectly.

B- By reading the book, “Outlive Your Life” I have come across multiple situations where I have realised I outlived my life, let me explain. I always would think I just wish today would be over, I wish I didn’t have to sit through this class. But after reading this book I started realising that we need to take our life day by day and make the best out of it. We our given our life for a reason. Not just to sit at home and wish that “today” was over but to enjoy what we have and to realize how much God has given us. In the book it talks about how over 1.75 people are desperately poor and yet we complain when we don’t get that cool jacket. These people can barely survive on food let alone having cool, clothing.

C- Some of the most exciting moments in my life where I saw the Holy Spirit working through me was just this month. I found myself in a situation (In Church) where someone did not understand what the pastor was preaching so I stepped in and gave them a better understand based on what I knew of the sermon. I would have never if done this before and that’s part of where the Holy Spirit comes in. I found myself doing something I would have never ever of done. But thanks t9 the Holy Spirit working through me I gave someone better knowledge of Jesus Christ word. Another moment where I saw the Holy Spirit working through me was here, in school. We had a huge presentation due in Religion 8 class. I had to do mine about Samara. When I went up in front of the class I flew giving all this importation and I don’t think I could have ever of done this without the help of the Holy Spirit.

D- My first memory verse I choose to connect to my life was 1 Timothy 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” I Think this verse can connect to my life in many different ways. One of the most important I think is setting examples for others. The young, old, and believers in Jesus Christ. Just like it says above some of the many different ways you could do this is through love, faith, speech etc… My second verse I choose that connects with my life is Luke 10:27, ”Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” This was part of a song we would sing almost every chapel in our old elementary school. I guess ever since I heard it it’s been apart of my life. I think it’s something everyone should know by heart. Loving the Lord you God with every part of your heart, soul, mind, and strength. This connects with my life because I see myself today loving God with all my heart.

E- I noticed many events throughout the movie “The Bible Continues” that came clear to me. One story that really struck my attention was when Peter rejoiced and praised God. They were in the ocean trying to catch fish and they were catching barely over ten fish. All the sudden they hear a voice say, “Try going from the right side.” They go to that side and catch at least 50 fish. At that second they knew his voice, the voice of the Holy One, God. I also was intrigued by the scene of God ascending. I feel like this was portrayed in a very Holy and Godly way. I think a theme that is repeated multiple times throughout this movie was Witness and Holy Spirit. Evidence for that occurs in episode 3. The Holy Spirit worked through Peter to heal a man who never thought he would walk again. He connected this event with witness. Witnessing the Holy Spirit working through him giving him the powers to make this man walk again. I think that we should take from this that the Holy Spirit works through everyone. In scenarios where we are scared and in moments we need him most. In our darkest times. Throughout this show, violence was shown. I didn’t understand how fighting over things as easy as there being a God is revalent to the Bible. I understand how many people do not believe there is a God but I don’t think that violence is the answer. That is my opinion over the series “The Bible Continues.”

Chapter 14 Review

Ashlyn DeBoer
Hello my name is Ashlyn DeBoer and today I am writing a review for chapter 14 in the book, “Outlive Your Life.”

What is the theme of this chapter?
I think the theme for chapter 14 is Prayer
What specific evidence do you have for this?
On page 145 it says, “Her daughter was dying, and her prayer was urgent.” I think this shows us how important prayer can be in certain situations. And how praying for others might just seem like a normal let’s just pray to get it over with but what they don’t realize is that God hears all our prayer and they might not make a difference in our life but it does in there’s.
What are the author’s main points? How do they relate to the theme?
I think the author writes a lot of bad situations throughout chapter 14 and she’s trying to get us to figure out how important prayer is and how much of an impact it can make. This easily relates to the theme because of prayer.
Are there any ideas that are implied? How and why?
The main idea as I have mentioned multiple times above is prayer and this is Implied multiple times just like on page 150 “My brother found them on a junkyard.” We need to pray for these people because their situation could of course be different but would if they are poor then they deserve to be prayed for.  I could name 3 people right off the bat who go through this situation and ever since our family prayed for them they got a job and isn’t making a living.
What do you think the author’s goal was, and did he achieve it?
I think the authors goal was to teachers ways to pray for others and build them up. I learned so much by just reading this one chapter. Yes I think the author achieved his goal.

Chapter 10 review

Hello, my name is Ashlyn DeBoer and today I am going to be writing as a book critic for ch 10 in this book we are reading called “Outlive Your Life.”

What is the theme of this chapter?
I think the theme for chapter 10 is compassion
What specific evidence do you have for this?
On the beginning of this chapter they begin it with “When the hungry pray, he listens. When orphans cry, he sees.” I think this relates to the theme because I feel like not only me but everyone else needs to work on having a stronger compassion for others more less than yourself. Being able to feel sorry and want to help the orphans for instance is an instant sign that you have compassion for others.
What are the author’s main points? How do they relate to the theme?
I think the author’s point is to try to show us how to relate to God. On page 99 it says “God makes the poor his priority.” I think this like I said above relates to the theme because of four words showing compassion for others. Just as God did for the poor, not wealthy.
Are there any ideas that are implied? How and why?
I think the main idea implied is finding different ways to develop compassion for others. Whether that means caring for the poor or even donating money to orphans to show that you care.
What do you think the author’s goal was, and did he achieve it?
I think the authors goal was to show us one word Compassion ways to be compassionate to others. In the last page of chapter 10it talks about an organization that I think we all need to be a part of called Compassion International. Helping those who need it most.

Chapter 9 review

Hello my name is Ashlyn DeBoer and today we are going to be reviewing for chapter 9 in this book we are reading called Outlive Your Life

The theme for chapter 9 is Hypcrocity
Evidence for this- “let’s take hypocrisy as seriously as God does” this shows how not only how God took this but how serious we should take it.
Authors main points- To do good things by grace and through our actions. In other words this means to do good deeds for others not for our own actions but for there’s. Our title Hypcrocity relates to a quote she said in the book stating “Lets take Hypcrocity as seriously as God does. How can we?” This question towards the end related to my answer above.
Implied ideas- Are going against God not just for others but self. I think the main ideas are all stated on page 93 “Expect no credit for good deeds.” “Give financial gifts in secret.” Don’t fake spiritually.” I think these rule should be for all to follow not just me or just you but for all.
Opinion on authors goal- Authors goal how to avoid angering God by not being a hypocrite I think he achieved this by again the steps listed above. By reading this the authors goal came to me right away. I think that it was the first quote she said “expect no credit for good deeeds” this means not doing this for others actions but to help those who need it more. Yes she did achieve this goal.

Outlive Your Life Chapter 6 review

 Ashlyn DeBoer

Hello, my name is Ashlyn DeBoer and today I am doing a review as a book critic for chapter 6 in this book we are reading called “Outlive Your Life.”

 What is the theme of this chapter?

I think the theme for chapter 6 is Spreading the Holy Gospel

 What specific evidence do you have for this?

I got the idea that theme Is rejoicing because of page 55, “The believed met together in the temple every day, they ate together in there homes, happy to share their food with joyful hearts.” Acts 2:46. “Every day in the temple they continued teaching the people and telling the good news- that Jesus is Christ.” I think we should take from this that not only did they spread the news then but the want us to spread Gods new now.

 What are the author’s main points? How do they relate to the theme?

I think the authors main point is to show us ways to “open our doors, and opening our hearts” to try something new and to spread the holy gospel just as families did in the temple like I talked about above. This relates to the theme because Throughout this chapter it talks about spreading spreading spreading so that’s what I think the authors main point Is.

 Are there any ideas that are implied? How and why?

I think the main idea that is implied is on page 56. “Do you have  front door? A table? Chairs? Bread and meat for sandwiches? Congratulations! You just qualified to serve in the most ancient of ministries: Hospitality.” We have so much that we don’t even realize so what the authors pointing our is why don’t we try to help others have this great life that we have.

 What do you think the author’s goal was, and did he achieve it?

I think the goal was to encourage others to do things that we or at least I might never have the guts to do. I think one quote that kind of stook with me was on page 57 “Address the needs of your guess. First century hospitality included foot washing. Modern day hospitality includes the sharing of food and drink. No television, no music, but the chance for them to share.” I think that the authors story was leading up to this quote. To tell others different ways to allow them to share and possibly you to invite Christ into there lives.

Outlive Your Life review 4

Ashlyn DeBoer

Hello my name is Ashlyn DeBoer and today I am writing as a book critic for my Religion 8 class.

 What is the theme of this chapter?

Theme for chapter 4- Gods Gift In All Ways

 What specific evidence do you have for this?

On page 34 it quotes “The cold milk stirred images of one of Gods Great gifts.” In the paragraph where this quote is mentioned it talks about how sometimes we will spend time “dipping and slurping” our way through some things that most people can’t in a more critical time in our and even there lives.

 What are the author’s main points? How do they relate to the theme?

I think the authors main point in chapter 4 is to show us how somtimes we will make an effort to do good for others then we will get distracted (page 34). For instance community work, somtimes we will be working and a second later we will be off task talking to others about something that I’m sure is less important that helping others who needs it more than us.

 Are there any ideas that are implied? How and why?

I think the main idea that is implied is two words Helping others. On page 38 it says, “Tel, me what your doing, I’m going to give you a second chance. This police officer saw this guy in a older car driving and speeding. He never really did anything wrong until then. The police offer helped him out and told him that he would give him a second chance as an example. This is how he helped and why as an example.

 What do you think the author’s goal was, and did he achieve it?

I think the authors goal was to express to others in different ways how helping others really helps. On 38 it says “The grain to grain process is a demanding one” in my opionion this is showing us how this may be a process and for others it might not be but If we take this as a chance to help others that process with pay off. And yes I do think the author achieved this goal.

Outlive Your Life Chapter 3 review

 What is the theme of this chapter?

I think the main theme for chapter 3 is Let God unshell you

 What specific evidence do you have for this?

On page 23 it quotes, “Why just last week someone told me about regions of the world that have no clean water, without my clamshell to protect me who knows what I would have done.” I feel like she is trying to show us that we don’t only have to rely on our clamshells as it says above but what I see is her trying to show us that we have a God to that we can rely on.

 What are the author’s main points? How do they relate to the theme?

I feel like the author was trying to give us a better point of view on ways we can rely on others instead of putting al, our trust in one thing. She quotes, “How can we change the world when we can’t even change our bad habits.” Right after that she said “Best to climb in and shut the shell, right?” I think when we are in our darkest times we like to just shut the shell instead of trying to come up with a solution.

 Are there any ideas that are implied? How and why?

I think the main idea that is implied in this story is to not just shut everything up and bundle our feelings up inside but instead to just pray and let God help us and rely on him not on what might happen if we keep our feelings bundled up inside.

 What do you think the author’s goal was, and did he achieve it?

I think just like I said above that the authors main Goal was to help those who might not have that one friend you can trust in to keep what your feeling to themselves but instead to tell God your felling and as it says above each page “Let God unshell you.”

Outlive Your Life Chapter she 1 and 2

Ashlyn DeBoer

Hello, my name is Ashlyn DeBoer and today I am writing for my Religion 8 class for this book we are reading called, “Outlive Your Life.”

 What is the theme of this chapter? Theme for chapter 1- Putting others before yourself. Theme for chapter 2- Encouragement

 What specific evidence do you have for this?

On page 13 it quotes, “My name is Edith, and I help cancer patients.” This related to my theme encouragement because she is impacting others to help, help, help. On page 5 it says, “As a result, 10 million of them die each year from diarrhea, a true respiratory illness, and measles.” This is showing not only me but others how much people go through things that we don’t realize each day. This makes everyone want to help make an impact on others.

 What are the author’s main points? How do they relate to the theme?

i think the authors main points are to show how much impact it can make on ones life if you (as simple as) donating money, or just talking to them. This realates to my theme because Putting others before yourself is the same as making an impact, helping them before you watch tv or go shopping. And last encouragement which relates because I feel like all of these points she makes throughout this book is trying to encourage others to take that extra step and reach out.

 Are there any ideas that are implied? How and why?

I think the main idea implied is just like I keep repeating above is how much an impact can help and how much it shows the poor how much we care about them. How, we can do this pretty much everywhere. The numbers in the book mentioned are so big that I’m pretty sure everywhere you go, your chance of seeing someone who’s hungry or poor is pretty large. “1.75 billion people are desperately poor.”

 What do you think the author’s goal was, and did he achieve it?

i think the authors main goal was to show us what others are going through. Also to show us how good of a life we have now, and what our life could look like to others. I think with all the facts and all the points the author made in this book that she definitely achieved this goal.
